A prepaid sub-meter is a device installed in your home or rental unit that measures how much electricity or water you use. Just like buying airtime, you buy units upfront and load them onto the meter.

The meter works on a “pay-as-you-go” system. You buy a prepaid token, punch the code into your meter, and it loads the units. As you use electricity or water, the units go down until it’s time to recharge again.

  • No more surprise bills, you only pay for what you use.
  • Easy budgeting and control of your usage.
  • Landlords don’t have to chase tenants for payments.
  • No billing disputes, everything is transparent.
  • Encourages responsible energy and water use.

You can buy tokens almost anywhere. Pick’n Pay, Shoprite, Spar, Checkers, garages, ATMs and banking apps all sell vouchers.

After buying a token, you’ll get a 20-digit code. Enter that code into your sub-meter keypad, and the units will load instantly.

With a prepaid meter, you’re always in control. No unpaid bills, no unexpected charges, and no stress for landlords or tenants. Everyone pays upfront for what they use.

Your token is charged at the official municipal tariff rate for your area. This means you’re paying the same rates you would on a normal municipal meter.

All you need to do is complete our registration form received when you purchased your meter, and email it to info@tmeters.co.za, and we’ll take care of the rest.

No. Your municipal meter stays in place. The prepaid sub-meter is added on to help landlords and tenants manage usage and payments between themselves.

Yes, absolutely. If you have multiple tenants or units, separate meters for each unit can be installed. That way, every tenant manages and pays for their own usage.

No. Our prepaid meters are designed with anti-tamper technology. If tampering is detected, the meter will revert to Tamper mode. The meter will not function in Tamper mode without a Tamper Token that only our call centre can provide. Tampering is also illegal and can lead to fines.

Most meters allow you to mute the alarm by pressing a few keys. The exact steps differ by model – we’ll give you a quick guide for your specific meter.

When a tenant buys a token the funds will be paid into the landlords nominated account between the 1st and 5th of the month.

TMS charges a service fee of 10%+Vat, which is typically selected by Landlords to be charged to the tenant (End User). When a tenant purchases either electricity, or water TMS will charge its Service Fee at the point of purchase automatically. Third Party Vendors (Shops, petrol stations, online banking) charge additional Fees which may be enquired at point of purchase, which typically ranges from 2-5% + Vat.
